Rare Choice AU 1852 Wass, Molitor Five Dollar1852 $5 Wass Molitor Five Dollar, Small Head AU55 NGC. K-1, R.6. This pretty Choice AU piece has the Small Head with a rounded bust tip that is over the 1 in the date. W.M. & CO. is inset in the coronet, with IN CALIFORNIA GOLD on the reverse above the denomination, spelled out FIVE DOLLARS. This greenish-gold example retains much luster, and obviously spent only a short time in circulation before being snatched out, likely by some distant Californian in search of a memento. The date and peripheral legends are always found weak, as here, although the central devices on each side are relatively bold. A smattering of light, undistracting abrasions can be seen on each side, with only a couple of ticks on the cheek and near star 1 requiring mention. A small planchet indentation appears above IV in FIVE on the reverse, with a small flaw on the rim below I. A search through our auction records reveals that this is the highest-graded example we have offered, as well as the first specimen in more than a dozen years. The Wass, Molitor coins are popular for their reverse inscriptions IN CALIFORNIA GOLD or SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA on the reverse, tying them forever to those mythic events in California that changed so much of U.S. history, including U.S. numismatic history.
