Rare 1852 Assay Office 900 Thous Fifty Dollars1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. VF20 PCGS. K-14, High R.5. In his 1983 reference, Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States, Don Kagin states that 23,800 pieces were produced of this issue, all in the first two months of 1853. Presumably, most of these were eventually melted, given the scarcity of survivors. This straw-gold example has fully legible legends, although the date and OFFICE are faint. Numerous tiny marks are typical for a circulated Fifty Dollar octagonal 'slug.' Housed in an older generation holder. Listed on page 298 of the 2005 Guide Book.(#10019) (PCGS# 10019)
