Description

1852 Humbert Fifty Dollar Slug, 887 Thous., VF35
K-11, Second-Generation Reeded Edge Design

1852 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. VF35 NGC. K-11, R.5. The 1851-52 Humbert / U.S. Assay Office of Gold fifty dollar slugs with reeded edge represent a vast efficiency improvement over the Lettered Edge 1851 pieces, with the previous edge lettering transferred to encircle the obverse rim (and no longer applied by hand on each coin, individually). The K-11 887 Thous pieces begin with AUGUSTUS / HUMBERT at lower left, while K-13 887 Thous coins have UNITED / STATES at lower left. The present K-11 specimen is moderately worn, consistent with the Choice VF grade level. Most of the wear appears on the high points of the eagle, typical for the issue. All lettering is easily legible. The yellow and rose-gold surfaces display attractive medium-intensity luster. Listed on page 368 of the 2011 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10217)
