Important 1853 Assay Office Ten Dollar Gold1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 884 Thous.--AU50 Details, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Kagin-15, R.7. Very few examples of this issue have survived with less than a dozen known, per Don Kagin's rarity rating. At the time, larger denomination gold issues were produced in greater quantities, perhaps because it took the same effort to produce each gold piece, regardless of size. It could be presumed that the smaller denominations were only produced for those who brought in limited quantities of gold, or to balance the books on larger deposits. This example has matte-like surfaces with light greenish-yellow gold color. The surfaces are lightly abraded, and cleaning has left light hairlines on both sides. Listed on page 298 of the 2005 Guide Book.(#10004) (PCGS# 10004)
