Rarely Seen 1853 Moffat Double Eagle1853 $20 Moffat & Co. Twenty Dollar AU53 NGC. K-19, High R.5. In 1853, Curtis, Perry and Ward were legally allowed to use John Moffat's name under the terms of an earlier agreement. At the time Curtis, Perry and Ward were operating as the U.S. Assay Office. That the USAOG would use a private minter's name on their coinage speaks volumes about the integrity and intrinsic value of John Moffat's private coinage. We have handled only four other examples of this issue over the past 12 years, which makes us wonder if it is not even scarcer than Kagin's High R.5 rating. This piece shows a surprising amount of mint luster for the grade, with the usual inconsistent striking definition. The green-gold surfaces have a heavy accent of reddish patina, especially around the margins, and there are numerous small to medium sized abrasions on each side, but these are consistent with seven points of circulation. Population: 0 in 53, 11 finer (1/05).
