Description:
1853 Moffat Twenty, K-19, AU58
Struck After Moffat's Departure
1853 $20 Moffat & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 PCGS. K-19, High R.5. Among the more curious timings of the California Gold Rush private coinages was the striking of this Moffat & Co. twenty dollar issue after the departure of its founder and namesake. It takes its form from the U.S. double eagle with only two substitutions, MOFFAT & CO. for LIBERTY and SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA for UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This near-Mint representative, though it has light to moderate abrasions, shows only a trace of wear on its still-lustrous wheat-gold surfaces. The 1853 Moffat twenty is rare in any condition but especially in near-Mint. Listed on page 384 of the 2014 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 58, 1 finer (11/13).
