Description

1860 Clark, Gruber Ten, AU55, K-3
Original and Appealing

1860 $10 Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU55 NGC. K-3, R.5. Many of the California Gold Rush gold-seekers who remained on the West Coast until the late 1850s heard a new slogan after the Colorado Gold Rush began in 1858, "Pike's Peak or Bust." Just as had occurred a decade earlier in San Francisco, private coiners such as brothers Milton and Austin Clark, with partner Emanuel Henry Gruber, built a mint in Denver City to fashion the newly mined gold into commercial coinage of known assay. The 1860 tens featured a triangular volcanolike shape that scarcely resembled the real mountain. This Choice AU example offers much remaining mint luster over original surfaces showing attractive orange-gold color and a paucity of mentionable distractions. Listed on page 390 of the 2013 Guide Book. (NGC ID# ANK3, PCGS# 10137)
