Description

1861 White Metal Twenty Dollar Clark-Gruber
K-12, MS63, Apparently Struck Out of Collar

1861 $20 Clark, Gruber $20 White Metal Die Trial MS63 NGC. K-12, R.8. The 1861 double eagle is rarely seen as a regular production coin or as a pattern. The patterns were struck in copper, white metal, and nickel. This variant shows seven stars facing Liberty instead of the usual six, and on the reverse the V in DENVER is punched over a still-visible N. The surfaces retain much of the original brightness and both sides are no darker than light gray. This piece appears to have been struck out of collar. This is not mentioned in the Kagin reference but it stands to reason twenties would have been so produced since the other three denominations are known to have been struck out of collar. The strike is strong throughout. (PCGS# 10153)
