Description:
Very Rare 1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. Copper Five Dollars
1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Die Trial VF25 PCGS. K-10c, Reeded Edge, R.7. Across the various dates and denominations of Clark, Gruber & Co. coinage, various die trials in copper, nickel, or white metal are known. Except for the 1860 and 1861 copper $20 pieces, these are all very rare. No Clark, Gruber & Co. $5 copper die trial has appeared in a Heritage auction in the past dozen years. This dark brown example is bluntly struck in the centers, and has a few small marks on the neck. Minor verdigris accompanies the R in CLARK. An important opportunity for the alert specialist.
