Description

(1837-42) C.Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 70G. 20C. AU 55 PCGS. Kagin-13, Breen-7762. Struck by the Bechtlers ca. 1840-42. Perfect dies, struck prior to the cracking and buckling which characterizes many examples. Attractive old coppery toning can be seen on both sides; some very minor abrasions are hidden by the color.
This is a rare variety in all grades and a particularly hard coin to locate in AU or better grades. In our estimation, there are between 25 and 35 known with the typical coin grading Extremely Fine. We have seen only a small handful of true AU coins and only one that we would grade Mint State. Last sold as Lot 1417 in Stack's October 1994 James Stack Collection where it realized $6600; earlier owned by Hillyer Ryder, F.C.C. Boyd and Wayte Raymond; earlier Lot 302 in the March, 1927 Wayte Raymond sale. Listed on page 273 of the 1998 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10070)
