Description:
(1837-42) C.Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU 55 PCGS. Kagin-20, Breen-7754. Struck in coin alignment; perfect dies. Superbly toned with a fiery orange-gold obverse; the reverse has a deep coppery-gold overtone with splashes of iridescent orange-gold and green. Somewhat reflective with a few old hairlines but exceptionally attractive overall and among the finest Bechtler $5s of any variety that we have seen.
This variety is very quickly identifiable by the presence of a large star below 134 G; the letter G is, in fact , a C to which a modification has been done by hand. This is far and away the most available Bechtler $5 of any variety. There are probably more than 100 pieces known with most of these grading Very Fine to Extremely Fine. In AU, this variety is a solid R.7 with around 8 to 10 pieces known. The North Georgia Collection example has to be among the finest known and certainly has great eye appeal. Listed on page 273 of the 1998 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10097)
