Description:
Sharply Struck Mormon Quarter Eagle--One of the Finest Known
1849 Mormon Quarter Eagle AU 50 PCGS. K-1, High R.5. A very high grade for this elusive Mormon issue. Heavily melted shortly after issuance when assays proved the coins were not "pure gold" as stated, and in fact, were considerably underweight. The surfaces are deep orange-gold in color, and the coin shows evidence of having been struck from buckled dies, as all are. Localized striking weakness is limited to the date on the reverse with all the other devices strongly impressed. Lightly abraded with a few more noticeable marks on the miter on the obverse. Listed on page 283 of the 1996 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10259)
