Description:
1850 Mormon Five Dollar, Fine 15
1850 Mormon Half Eagle $5 Fine 15 NGC. K-5, High R.5. First, we have to note that NGC made a mechanical error on this piece. The insert says this is an 1849, but it is really an 1850. The design difference between the two years involves an oval above the All Seeing Eye of Jehovah on the 1850, whereas on the 1849 only a half-oval is present that presumably represents an eyelid. Also, periods are placed before and after the word LORD on the 1849, and they are missing on the 1850. These design differences wouldn't be mentioned, but on this piece much of the reverse is weakly struck and worn away, including the date. This is the first 1850 Mormon five we have seen in some time. In fact, the last one we offered was in the 1999 ANA Sale. The surfaces are original with reddish patina evident around the outer devices. The only abrasion we see of note is a horizontal mark just below and to the right of the eye. Listed on page 301 of the 2001 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10265)
