Description

Wass, Molitor & Company Five Dollar

1852 Wass Molitor Five Dollar, Large Head VF 25 PCGS. K-2, R.6. Wass Molitor fives had the highest intrinsic value of all the private coiners in California with an average value of $5.04 per $5 gold piece. Yet, they were also among the worst produced of all California gold coins. This piece shows evidence of that, having been struck from a severely buckled die that gives a dished appearance to the coin. Softly struck as well with a couple of rim dings on the obverse at 3 o'clock and a scrape in the upper reverse field above the eagle's head. Listed on page 285 of the 1999 Guide Book. (NGC ID# ANJL, PCGS# 10342)
