1885 3CN MS65 NGC. CAC....
Gem 1885 Three Cent Nickel1885 3CN MS65 NGC. CAC. The 1885 three cent nickel claims the smallest business-strike mintage of the series, at a meager 1,000 pieces. The proof mintage for the date was much larger than the regular-issue production, with 3,790 examples struck to satisfy collector demand. Clearly, the denomination was not useful in the national economy of the 1880s, and the three cent piece was only minted in proof format the following year. The denomination was discontinued after 1889. The 1885 is scarce-to-rare in all grades and examples in Gem condition are very rare.
The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with well-detailed design elements and only minor signs of contact. The lustrous surfaces are toned in attractive shades of champagne-gold and lavender, with exceptional eye appeal. Census: 5 in 65, 6 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753)
