Description

Gem 1885 Three Cent Nickel
Uncommon as a Business Strike

1885 3CN MS65 PCGS. Like its predecessors in 1883 and 1884, the 1885 three cent nickel issue has a smaller business strike mintage (1,000 pieces) than proof production (3,790 specimens). The 1885 is the key to the business strike series and a condition rarity at the Gem level. This carefully preserved piece is one such coin, partly toned olive-gold over a blue-tinged pearl-gray base. Luminous surfaces show appreciable striking softness at the high design elements, usually a detriment but in this case a piece of confirming evidence that this coin is in fact a business strike. Housed in a first-generation holder. Population: 12 in 65, 12 finer (12/10).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753)
