Pleasing 1885 Three Cent Nickel, MS66 PCGS1885 3CN MS66 PCGS. Although a common date as a proof, just 1,000 business strikes were issued of the 1885 three-cent nickel. Only a relatively small percentage of those survive today. We note that 25 examples have appeared at major auction sales over the past 15 or so years. The two major grading services have certified a total of 77 pieces (8/05), many of which were undoubtedly resubmissions.
The current piece is a lovely, well frosted example that benefits from delicate light gray patina with sky-blue and pale violet undertones. Both the strike and luster on this briefly minted business strike are strictly first rate. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder. Population: 8 in 66, 2 finer (8/05).(#3753) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753)
