Description:
Superb Gem 1885 Three Cent Nickel Tied for Finest Certified
This lot is subject to conditional sale. This lot, along with all lots between 4001 and 4024, are also offered as a complete set . The hammer prices for these 24 lots will be totaled and compared to the final bid on the complete set (Lot #4189). The complete set will be bid on last and must exceed 5% of the conditional total, or $225,000 (whichever is greater) in order to be sold as a set. In that event, all individual bids on lots 4001 through 4024 will be considered outbid.

1885 3CN MS67 PCGS. Apricot and gunmetal-gray colors grace this sharply struck and shimmering Superb Gem. Unlike the 1886, the 1885 was not a proof-only issue. However, just 1,000 business strikes were coined, and these are far less often encountered (in any grade) than their proof counterparts. The advent of the Registry Set has emphasized the value of the late date business strike Three Cent Nickels, which were undervalued for many years in favor of proofs. As of (1/05), PCGS has certified a mere 39 pieces in Mint State, and at the extraordinary level of MS67, only two have been certified with none finer.
