1854 $3 MS61 NGC....
Popular 1854 Three Dollar Type, MS611854 $3 MS61 NGC. Although the 1854, 1874, and 1878 three dollar gold are the most widely collected for type purposes due to their relatively plentiful mintages, the 1854 is the most abundant of the three in terms of its original emission, at 138,618 business strikes plus a smattering of proofs. Today the 1854 is the second most abundant in Mint State, superseded by the 1878. The 1854 still edges out the 1878 in being one of the always-popular first-year issues of a new type, and it is technically a one-year subtype, with the Small Letters reverse. This piece displays deep, mellow orange-gold patina, with some claims to a finer grade in terms of good eye appeal and a relative absence of distracting abrasions.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 25M3, PCGS# 7969)
