1854 $3 MS64 PCGS....
Near-Gem 1854 Three Dollar Gold Piece1854 $3 MS64 PCGS. An amazing example of the new denomination that was first struck in 1854, with highly lustrous and brilliant yellow-gold surfaces that are accented by deep orange patina. The design motifs are boldly detailed on both sides.
In addition to its status as the first year of production for the newly authorized three dollar denomination, it is also a one-year subtype with small letters on the reverse. Beginning in 1855, DOLLARS was in a larger font. While most type collectors will probably still vie for just a single three dollar gold piece, those who desire minor design modifications will want two examples of the denomination. Fortunately, enough 1854 threes were minted (138,618) that such a goal is reasonable. Population: 116 in 64, 25 finer (9/08).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M3, PCGS# 7969)
