Description:
Gem 1854 Three Dollar Gold
Sharply Struck With Dazzling Luster
1854 $3 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1854 three dollar gold was the first-year issue of what some considered to be an unnecessary denomination. Many were saved as souvenirs and others circulated only briefly, with some ending up as cufflinks or other jewelry. Specimens are fairly available through the MS64 grade level, but Gem and better coins are more difficult. PCGS and NGC have seen fewer than 30 submissions pieces in MS65, with about 20 finer (11/11).
The present Gem exhibits dazzling luster radiating from peach-gold surfaces accented with tinges of lime-green. The design elements are well-impressed, including the hair beneath the headband, which is often weak on this issue. The lower part of the 8 in the date reveals minor softness. Both sides are nicely preserved, although an unobtrusive pinscratch is concealed in the hair beneath BER, along with a minuscule obverse rim tick at 11 o'clock. Population: 19 in 65, 10 finer (11/11).
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 4/2006), lot 1770, which garnered $26,450.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M3, PCGS# 7969)
