Description:
Lovely Near-Mint 1854-O Three Dollar
Lapped Reverse, Variety 2
1854-O $3 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. The near-Mint State grade of the present 1854-O three dollar puts it in the small minority of survivors, as most certified examples grade no better than Choice XF. This piece is one of 89 submissions in this grade at NGC, including a sure but unknown number of duplications, and there are 19 finer (12/12). The sandy-gold surfaces on this piece are still quite lustrous, and the strike is bold overall, save for the lapped bow on the wreath that signifies the commoner Variety 2, actually a die state. A few stray obverse marks are strictly in concert with the grade. Despite the moderate mintage of 24,000 coins, the New Orleans Mint would never follow up with a second O-mint three dollar issue. This is a lovely high-end example for the grade.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25M5, PCGS# 7971)
