Description:
Second-Year 1855 Three Dollar, MS64
1855 $3 MS64 NGC. Whatever fanfare and goodwill the three dollar gold piece may have had on its 1854 debut evaporated swiftly. Business strike mintages went downhill swiftly, as the second-year production of 50,555 pieces was less than half of the first year's output. Complicating matters further for today's collectors, the second-year coins also were far less likely to be saved as novelties. This near-Gem is an unusual condition-rarity survivor, yellow-gold with touches of orange and the denomination's characteristic swirling luster. Well-defined devices show few marks of any individual significance. Census: 21 in 64, 2 finer (6/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M6, PCGS# 7972)
