Description

1855 Three Dollar Gold, MS64+
Very Rare in Higher Grades

1855 $3 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Production of three dollar gold pieces decreased dramatically in 1855, because the coins were not needed in the national economy. Only 50,555 pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and a token mintage of 6,600 pieces was accomplished at San Francisco. The Philadelphia issue is not too difficult to locate in lower grades today, but Choice examples, like the present coin, are rare.

This high-end Choice specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with a touch of softness on the ribbon bow. Satiny mint luster radiates from both sides and the pleasing yellow and rose-gold surfaces show few signs of contact. Population: 19 in 64 (1 in 64+), 4 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M6, PCGS# 7972)
