Description

AU58 1855-S Three Dollar
Subtly Reflective Luster

1855-S $3 AU58 NGC. In its early history, the three dollar gold piece was struck at a trio of branch mints: Dahlonega and New Orleans for the first year only, and San Francisco starting the year after in 1855. This near-Mint example from the first West Coast issue of the odd denomination has a faint orange cast to subtly reflective yellow-wheat surfaces. Striking details are crisp wherever wear has left them intact, including on the wreath's bow-knot, and the small amount of friction on the high points scarcely influences this minimally abraded example's generous eye appeal. NGC has certified just three examples as Mint State (4/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 7K5D, PCGS# 7973)
