Description:
1855-S Three Dollar Gold, XF40
Scarce San Francisco Issue
1855-S $3 XF40 NGC. As a rule, the San Francisco Mint seldom struck any three dollar gold pieces, the exceptions being in 1855, 1856, 1857, 1860, and 1870. Apparently, the pieces were not well-accepted even in the specie-starved West. Quarter eagles and especially half eagles were the small denomination gold coins of choice. The small mintage of 6,600 pieces (plus a couple of known proofs) yields few examples of the 1855-S for collectors today. This yellow-gold example is moderately worn and abraded, with nice remaining detail and a hint of mint luster.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 25M7, PCGS# 7973)
