Description

1856 Three Dollar, MS64
Only Four Finer at PCGS

1856 $3 MS64 PCGS. The 1856 three dollar gold piece had a mintage of 26,010 coins, the sixth highest mintage of the denomination. However, this date is rarely encountered above the lowest Mint State grades, and the average certified grade is just AU55. The present Choice Mint State specimen has just 31 peers at PCGS, with only four finer examples submitted to that grading service (3/13). Both sides have frosty yellow-gold luster with a few scattered surface marks that prevent a Gem grade. The surfaces are pleasing with a trace of pale orange toning along Liberty's profile. This is a splendid specimen for a type collector or series specialist.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M8, PCGS# 7974)
