Description:

Mint State 1856-S Three Dollar
Conditionally Rare Old West Memento
1856-S $3 MS61 NGC. Medium S, one of two such die pairings, the reverse die here showing an extra small arc of metal curving down and left from the bottom of the second L in DOLLARS. The 1856-S three dollar gold is an odd duck in more ways than one, as it is one of only four collectible S-mint issues in the series, along with the 1855-S, 1857-S, and 1860-S. It is, however, by far the highest-mintage of that quartet, at 34,500 coins -- nearly as much as the 1874 Philadelphia issue at 41,800 pieces, usually collected as a type coin. But far fewer pieces of the 1856-S survive in high grade; they saw heavy circulation in the Old West of the 1850s and 1860s, and today the average graded coin is about Choice XF. This Mint State specimen displays generous luster over yellow-gold surfaces that show fewer marks than expected for the grade, producing strong eye appeal. Some mild strike weakness on the bowknot is typical for the issue, but overall the devices are well brought-up. Census: 10 in 61, 12 finer (2/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25M9, PCGS# 7975)
