Description:
1858 Three Dollar Gold, MS62
Rarest Series Issue From the 1850s
1858 $3 MS62 NGC. The 1858 three dollar gold was a meager production of only 2,133 circulation strikes plus a handful of proofs, estimated by Bowers at 10 to 14 pieces. He writes that "as the limited mintage suggests, the 1858 is the rarest three-dollar gold piece of the 1850s. So far as is known, all went into circulation and none were deliberately saved." Well-heeled collectors of the day, of course, preferred proof examples to business strikes. The present MS62 NGC example takes a two-toned approach, mellow orange-gold around the peripheries with a distinctive touch of lilac framing the facial features of Liberty. A couple of thin marks on the cheek and into the left obverse field help account for the grade, as does a comma-shaped mark near 6 o'clock on the lower reverse at the rim. The strike is surprisingly sharp on the central details of each side, further enhancing the considerable eye appeal. Census: 3 in 62, 1 finer (11/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MC, PCGS# 7978)
