Description

1860-S Three Dollar, AU58
Last Collectible Branch Mint Issue

1860-S $3 AU58 NGC. With the exception of the (so far as numismatics knows) unique 1870-S, the last three dollar gold issue produced outside Philadelphia was the 1860-S a decade earlier in San Francisco. Though 7,000 business strikes were produced, reports have 2,592 of those pieces melted at the Mint, making survivors elusive. This near-Mint representative has pale straw-gold radiance stretching across each side with a hint of watery reflectivity in the protected peripheral zones. Just a touch of rub affects high points such as the hair above Liberty's eye. NGC and PCGS have combined to certify just seven Mint State examples (3/13), making this near-Mint coin an important survivor.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25MF, PCGS# 7981)
