Description

1861 Three Dollar Gold, MS62
Bright, Semiprooflike Fields

1861 $3 MS62 NGC. This first-year Civil War three dollar saw a mintage of 5,959 circulation strikes, but many survivors were either hoarded or circulated relatively briefly. Likely three dozen to four dozen Mint State examples exist today. The fields on this MS62 specimen are bright and semiprooflike, with even orange-gold coloration throughout. The only mentionable marks are on the reverse, a diagonal mark above RS and a reeding mark to the left of the 3. The 1861 issue marked the last time until 1879 that the Philadelphia Mint paid out three dollar gold coins at face value. Census: 17 in 62, 12 finer (10/11).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25MG, PCGS# 7982)
