1861 $3 MS66 PCGS....
Appealing Gem Mint State 1861 Three Dollar Gold Piece1861 $3 MS66 PCGS. A magnificent coin for the specialist who demands outstanding quality and bold eye appeal. Note the reddish-gold color which lies undisturbed like the luster in the fields, and the fullness of the strike on Liberty's curls and the wreath. These attributes are rarely found in combination with such exceptional surfaces. A strong glass will reveal a minor nick in the field before Liberty's eye and we also note a couple of nicks just above the top of the wreath on the reverse. Mintage for the year petered out after 5,959 were coined for circulation, a paltry sum for collectors to choose from. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports illuminate three examples graded this high with a single coin graded higher of this date. This coin is a PCGS pop. 1 finest known with the next highest example a lone MS65.
