1864 $3 AU55 PCGS. CAC....
Overlooked 1864 Three Dollar, AU551864 $3 AU55 PCGS. CAC. The mid-Civil War mintage of three dollar gold pieces plunged in 1864 to 2,630 business strikes. Bowers' series reference deems it one of the scarcer issues of its era, with less than 200 examples surviving today: "Here is a significant American rarity that is generally overlooked by the majority of numismatists." This Choice AU example shows lightly abraded, semiprooflike yellow-gold surfaces. The reverse die is rotated about 25 degrees and shows the repunching on the 18 in the date that is typical for the issue. Population: 21 in 55, 45 finer (3/10).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 25MK, PCGS# 7985)
