Description:
Near-Mint 1865 Three Dollar Gold
Rare Early Series Issue
1865 $3 AU58 NGC. The 1865 three dollar gold piece had a limited mintage of 1,140 pieces, and collectors saved few examples. Q. David Bowers estimates 70-100 specimens survive today in all grades, and high-grade pieces are quite rare. The elusive nature of this issue was recognized at an early date, and the example in the Randall Collection (Woodward, 6/1885), lot 1025, was characterized as "very rare."

This well-detailed piece exhibits just a touch of wear on the high points of the feathers and the ribbon knot. The surfaces are semiprooflike, with bright greenish-gold color. Only minor, grade-consistent contact marks are present. Census: 18 in 58, 23 finer (3/13).
Ex: ANA Sacramento (Heritage, 3/2011), lot 4710, which realized $10,925.
