Condition Rarity MS64 1866 Three Dollar1866 $3 MS64 NGC. The post-Civil War experience of the three dollar gold denomination was one of next-to-nil circulation and generally minimal mintages punctuated by two years of excitement. The year 1866 was not among them, and just 4,000 business strikes were produced, including this distinctive near-Gem. Diffusely reflective luster is sun-gold and has only a hint of the swirling luster more commonly seen on business strikes. Well-defined devices have a hint of frostiness to them as well. A conditionally rare example of a challenging issue. Census: 1 in 64, 2 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MM, PCGS# 7987)
