Near-Gem 1867 Three Dollar Gold Piece, MS641867 $3 MS64 PCGS. This date is a favorite of Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, who wrote: "The 1867 $3 gold piece is an underrated date compared to the 1864 and 1869. The three issues have similar mintages, but the 1867 appears in far fewer numbers (both in circulated and Uncirculated grades). In fact, the 1867 shows up at auction an average of only thrice a year, one of the lowest averages of the entire denomination." The low mintage of just 2,600 coins means that prooflike examples are found rather frequently (when this date is found at all), although the present piece has mildly reflective satin luster. The devices are frosty with light cameo contrast on both sides. This is a splendid and highly desirable near-Gem representative. Population: 4 in 64, 3 finer (10/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MN, PCGS# 7988)
