Description:
1868 Three Dollar Gold, MS67 Prooflike
Only 4,850 Examples Coined
1868 $3 MS67 Prooflike NGC. A spectacular and flawless Superb Gem and the plate coin in The United States $3 Gold Pieces, 1854-1889, by Q. David Bowers with Douglas Winter. Presumably one of the first pieces struck from fresh dies, the gorgeously preserved fields are flashy and decidedly reflective. The well-struck devices are equally close to pristine. The obverse is immaculate, and lengthy inspection of the reverse is required before a few minute slide marks are perceptible from selected angles. Traces of mint frost are evident in the fields, especially on the reverse, attesting to the status of this specimen as a circulation strike.

A better date in the series, since only 4,850 business strikes were issued, along with 25 proofs, the latter all with the reverse rotated 180 degrees from normal, showing "medal turn" rather than the usual "coin turn." Several dozen pieces appear to have survived in Mint State; these were probably set aside by East Coast collectors of the day. However, it would take an essentially perfect example to challenge the finest known status of the present coin. Expect an exceptional price to be required to win this museum quality Indian Princess three dollar. Even the few surviving proof specimens are unlikely to challenge the eye appeal of this Superb Gem. Census: 1 in 67 Prooflike, 0 finer (11/13).
