Description:
Underrated 1868 Three Dollar Gold Piece
1868 $3 MS 63 PCGS. Although this issue's original mintage of 4,850 pieces is average by the standards of the three dollar series, Mint State survivors are elusive and inconceivably overlooked by most gold specialists. Although uniformly frosted, the surfaces show fields that are noticeably brighter than the devices. Every last feature is boldly defined, testimony to the care with which the Mint produced this coin. A few scattered abrasions seem to rule out a near-Gem grade, but we stress that the overall eye appeal is well above average for the MS 63 level. An important bidding opportunity for the advanced gold specialist. Population: 10 in 63, 9 finer (12/99). (NGC ID# 25MP, PCGS# 7989)
