Description:
1870 Three Dollar, Appealing MS63
Elusive in Mint State
1870 $3 MS63 NGC. CAC. The 1870 three dollar gold piece is a difficult issue to acquire in all grades, as might be expected with its low production run of only 3,500 circulation strikes. Mint State examples are especially elusive, especially above MS62. Indeed, the present Select offering is probably the finest that most collectors can hope to obtain.

Yellow-gold lustrous surfaces display occasional reddish-orange blushes, somewhat more extensive on the reverse. The design features are sharply struck, including the plumes in the headdress and the reverse bow knot. An unobtrusive patch of small marks midway between the U in UNITED and the chin will help to identify the coin. Both sides yield above-average eye appeal for the designated grade, aptly affirmed by CAC. Census: 2 in 63, 3 finer (11/13).
