Description:
1871 Three Dollar Gold, MS63
Low-Mintage Issue With Prooflike Surfaces
1871 $3 MS63 PCGS. The 1871 three dollar gold piece claims a memorably low mintage of just 1,300 pieces. Fortunately, a number of specimens were rescued from circulation in the early 20th century by coin dealer Thomas Elder, who issued premium lists of scarce gold issues to contemporary bank tellers. The 1871 is quite rare in Mint State.
The present coin is an attractive Select example, with semiprooflike greenish-gold surfaces that show rose highlights at the centers. The design elements are sharply detailed, with a touch of softness on the wreath. Visual appeal is quite strong for the grade. Population: 9 in 63, 13 finer (6/12).
