Second Finest Certified 1872 Three-Dollar--From the Donald Carter Collection1872 MS 64 NGC. It appears that both Akers and Taglione overestimated the availability of this low mintage issue in mint condition, with Taglione estimating that "as many as 40 strictly Uncirculated 1872s have survived." When one combines the numbers of mint state pieces certified by both PCGS and NGC and then factor out resubmissions, we arrive at a number of no more than 20 uncirculated pieces. This coin is currently tied with two others as second finest certified (1/98) with one gem graded (by PCGS). Like most of the high grade examples known, this piece has deeply mirrored fields. On the reverse, there are numerous, raised die scratches--a diagnostic of all 1872 threes. A bit softly struck on the highpoints of the design, the surfaces are exceptionally pleasing overall and exude a warm orange-gold patina. (NGC ID# 25MV, PCGS# 7994)
