Description

1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar, AU50
Rare, Low-Mintage Issue

1873 $3 Closed 3 AU50 PCGS. The 1873 Closed (or Close) 3 three dollar gold pieces struck for circulation are a mystery with no apparent solution in sight. They are unreported in Mint records, and may have been struck later than the date they bear. Guesses on the mintage have ranged from 100 to 1,000 pieces, but in any case they are keys to the series, usually found in XF or AU grades, as on the present AU50 coin. Light wear on the high points and moderate abrasions are consistent with a short spell in circulation. The obverse is pale yellow-gold, with deeper reddish-gold coloration on the reverse. The surfaces remain strongly reflective.
