Elusive 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollars AU581873 $3 Closed 3 AU58 PCGS. Typically reflective with an attractive coating of reddish patina that downplays the effect of scattered abrasions in the fields. The highpoints of the portrait and wreath are a trifle soft in strike, being most noticeable on the bow at the base of the reverse. Mintages of Three Dollar issues were very low after 1860. Except for 1874 and 1878, no issue surpasses 6,000 pieces. The 1873 Open 3 has a recorded production of 35 proofs, but the commercial mintage of the 1873 Closed 3 is unknown. It must have been low, however, given the rarity of survivors. Census: 22 in 58, 9 finer (11/05).
