1873 $3 Closed 3 AU58 PCGS....
Fascinating AU58 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar1873 $3 Closed 3 AU58 PCGS. The Closed 3 1873 three dollar gold pieces are the last in a sequence of enigmatic issues for that denomination. As noted in numerous pieces of numismatic literature, Mint records show no business strike production for the year; some scholars have speculated that the Closed 3 coins may be restrikes, coined up to several years later. Garrett and Guth (2006) take an agnostic view, simply noting that they " ... believe the mystery of the 1873 $3 gold pieces remains to be solved."
Whatever their actual status, the present near-Mint coin offers a tangible and tantalizing way to own the issue. The central devices are well struck overall, though slight softness is present at the lower wreath, and the luminous, mildly prooflike fields show lavender accents against an orange-gold base. Only a trace of friction is noted on the high points. Population: 23 in 58, 10 finer (5/08).
