Rare and Desirable 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar Gold Piece1873 $3 Closed 3 MS60 NGC. In a challenging series known for numerous rarities, the 1873 Closed 3 is among the most elusive Three Dollar issues as a business strike and is certainly the most enigmatic. No official records indicate the production of a business strike 1873. Based on the number of survivors, one must surmise that at least 200-300 pieces were produced and we can speculate that their omission from mint records was probably an oversight of an early (January) delivery. When seen, the typical 1873 Closed 3 generally shows a modest amount of circulation and is almost always prooflike. This Uncirculated representative is mildly reflective with numerous light abrasions in the fields. A squiggly lint mark in front of Liberty's brow and nose will serve to identify this specimen. There are some faint scrapes above Liberty's headdress below OF and minor handling marks elsewhere in the fields. Minor striking weakness is most noticeable on the ribbon knot of the wreath and a few leaf tips. A very rare coin in any grade, and this attractive coin will certainly make a welcome addition to an advanced collection.
