Description:
Desirable Uncirculated 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar Gold
1873 $3 Closed 3 MS61 PCGS. The 1873 is an impressive rarity, whether it is a Closed or Open 3 variant. The Open 3 coins are very seldom encountered with only 25 pieces believed struck. The Closed 3 date had an estimated mintage of 1,000 coins, which pales in comparison to its Open 3 counterpart, yet is still a significant absolute and condition rarity in the three dollar series. Both of the major grading services have only certified eight coins in MS61 with six finer (11/05), minus an uncertain number of resubmissions. The fields on this piece show the expected reflectivity and there is a significant amount of contrast apparent against the frosted devices. The striking details lack a bit of highpoint detail and each side shows numerous small abrasions that account for the grade.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25MW, PCGS# 7995)
