Description:

Key 1877 Three Dollar, Choice AU
Lightly Abraded, Top-Notch for the Grade
1877 $3 AU55 NGC. CAC. The mintage of the 1877 three dollar gold was minimal to begin with, at 1,468 pieces, and unlike some of the later low-mintage issues from the 1880s it appears not to have been saved in any significant numbers. Today it is among the keys to the series, with Q. David Bowers estimating in his series reference that no more than 100 examples survive in all grades, "plus a dozen or fewer in Mint State." NGC shows three examples in Mint State, two in MS61 and one in MS63; PCGS shows one, five, three, and one in MS60, MS61, MS62, and MS64, respectively, giving 13 submissions at both services combined. This Choice AU example displays the expected bright, semireflective fields over surfaces that are yellow-gold with a slight hint of reddish patina. There are obvious signs of handling in the form of light chatter on both sides, but no overt or distracting abrasions appear. Census: 7 in 55, 14 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25MY, PCGS# 7999)
