Low-Mintage 1880 Three Dollar, MS65+1880 $3 MS65+ NGC. CAC. Despite (or because of, more accurately) the low mintage of 1,000 coins for the 1880 three dollar gold "circulation strikes," most were plucked up by contemporary numismatists who recognized their rarity immediately. Today the average grade for certified pieces is MS62+, but Gems such as this piece are nonetheless rare. NGC has seen 16 submissions in 65 including the present piece in 65+, and only four submissions grade finer (2/13). This piece shows the typical mixture of frosty and prooflike surfaces that are virtually mark-free, although a couple of tiny dark toning spots occur near the obverse rim. The antique-gold surfaces show much character and eye appeal. One of the finest for a top-flight type set.
