1887 $3 MS60 NGC....
Elusive 1887 Three Dollar, MS601887 $3 MS60 NGC. Although the 1887 three dollar issue had the largest mintage of the 1880s, only 6,000 business strikes were produced, and the date remains elusive. It is believed that many of the coins were melted before they were ever released into circulation. This piece displays attractive canary-gold color with hints of orange and green along with pleasing luster. Die doubling appears at LIBERTY. A moderate diagonal streak of struck-in grease, as-made, runs across the central reverse.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2652, which realized $2,530.
