Description:
1874-CC Trade Dollar, MS62
Shattered Reverse Die
1874-CC T$1 MS62 PCGS. The obverse die shows considerable evidence of fatigue in the form of die cracks around the periphery. The strike is far sharper on the lower obverse than on the upper obverse, where the thin die cracks are most numerous (and the head of Liberty and adjacent stars are noticeably soft). The explanation lies on the lower reverse, where numerous heavier die cracks converge in a V shape below DO(LLAR); this is a die that was sinking and getting ready to shatter. Scattered contact marks and generous luster appear over mostly silver-gold surfaces. An interesting coin that will be of interest to die state specialists. Population: 41 in 62, 65 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2532, PCGS# 7035)
